Keeping Hope Alive

21-25 July (Mon-Fri)

18+; Fully catered

Our lives are indescribably busy and it can be difficult to take time out to ask the "Why?" questions. Why do we do what we do? Why do we try to make peace, save the environment, feed the world, when the problems never seem to get less? Why, in spite of all the gloom, do we not go under and give in to despair?

The answer is a quality which is the subject of myth, story, ancient writing and learned teaching. As it inspired the ancients, it now energises an enduring vision for the future. In darkest moments it can shrink to a mere spark or a tiny flicker. At other times it can blaze out in acts of remarkable courage which stir even the most resigned cynics.

Its name is HOPE and it has inspired people of faith throughout the ages with visions of what could be and what is to come. Hope sets us apart, raises us above despair and makes us try again no matter how many times we fail.

In our Catholic tradition, we claim the 'sure and certain hope' of resurrection. What do we understand by this? And how does it inform the decisions we make?

Our speakers this week will try to help us answer these and other questions.

They include Rev. Adrian Graffy, scripture scholar and author (who will also be our chaplain for the week); Rev. Robert Kaggwa, theologian and chaplain to Roehampton University; and David Wells, Director of the Department for Formation, Plymouth Diocese.

Chair: Anne Dixon
