Hyning (Summer week)
The Song of Songs: love poetry, allegory, or even a disguised political programme?
17-24 July (Tues-Tues)
18+ Partial Self-help
What does it mean? There are so many interpretations of this controversial book of the Bible, some of which we shall explore. You will have opportunities to discover what it might mean for you and to compare it with some other texts.
Members of the Hyning community will share with us some of St Bernard’s vision of the Song from his sermons. There will be a chance to look with Anne McGough at some aspects of its representation in art, with a workshop to follow throughout the week, and to find out with Vin Allerton about some of the many musical settings and adaptations inspired by the Song, ‘from Palestrina to Kate Bush’. Members, too, may wish to try out their own versions in poetic form.
Our chaplain, Nicholas Postlethwaite, will help with our discussions and with our ideas for incorporating the theme in our liturgies and reflections.
